History of the Domestic Goose Breeds
The domestic goose breeds originated in China during the second millennium BC. They went to India, Persia, and Egypt. In Ancient Egypt, they were considered sacred animals.

Embden Geese.
The Embden or Emden goose was developed in Germany and the Netherlands during the late 1800s. In 1869, two German farmers had a problem with their geese becoming aggressive towards their Neighbours. So, they cross-bred their geese to create an all-around goose.
This goose is white with blue eyes and an orange beak. They also have more feathers on their body and a larger tail than the common goose.
The gander can weigh almost 30 lbs. (14 kg) when it’s fully grown. These traits make the Emden geese easier to keep, and they are more suitable for commercial farming.

The neck of the Emden gander is longer than that of the female, and the wings are shorter. Male Emden goslings have a white belly and white head, while female goslings have less.
The Emden can be kept on a small scale for home use or on a large scale for commercial use. During the breeding season, the Emden goose can lay between 35 and 40 eggs.

Sebastopol Geese

Pilgrim Geese
This is an American goose breed similar to Toulouse in terms of appearance, size, temperament and health. A farmer named H.D. Cope created it in the 1930s.
Cope wanted to create a fast-growing goose that would lay good-quality eggs. His goal was to make a goose that could produce many eggs within a short time.
The Pilgrim goose has a medium-sized head, long neck, short legs and feet, large bill, and thick neck.
The Pilgrim breed has an auto-sexing trait that makes it easy to identify the male and female from each other. The male is darker than the female.

The male is much larger than the female. The female is smaller and has a longer tail than the male.
The adult male weighs between 6.3 to 8.2 kg (14 to 18 lbs.), while the adult female weighs between 5.4 to 7.3 kg (12 to 16 lb.)

The Pilgrim goose is often confused with the Common Pheasant. Both breeds are from the same family of birds, but they look different. The Pilgrim goose is smaller than the Common Pheasant and has a very long lifespan.
Pilgrims are usually sold as meat, but they are also good companions. They are known to be very vocal and have a loud “honk” when they are happy. They usually live around 15 to 20 years.
